The annual Sail Georgina pig roast is after the Mayors Cup, at 5pm. Prices are $17/person, or $12/person if you bring a pot luck salad or dessert.

LED Presentation

Hessel Pape and Roy Ham are doing a presentation on the topic of LEDs at 7:30pm on Tuesday April 12th at the York Region Police Station meeting room, on Baseline Road Road as part of their regular monthly Naturalists' club meeting.

Sail Georgina members are invited to attend this meeting since this information is of interest to us. Some samples have been donated for this presentation. These items will be given away at the end of the session to draw winners.

Work hours and harbour watch

Please remember that all Sail Georgina senior members are required to contribute at least 8 volunteer work hours per year, and spend two nights aboard their boat in the harbour as part of the "Harbour Watch" program. We currently have many work jobs, and many weekends, that still require volunteers.

Please visit the member home page (http://sailgeorgina.ca/memberhome.html) to confirm that we have tracked all the volunteer hours that you have signed up for already. You will also find links on that page to view and sign up for new work items. Thanks for your help and support in keeping the club smoothly running.

Garmin Chart Plotter Recall

Garmin has announced a recall on many models of their chart plotters. If you currently use a chart plotter or no someone that does have them go to Garmin' website to see if it is affected or check with your retailer. The skipper of Lake Pheonix was using one of the recalled models last year when they hit Cook Bay Shoal and sunk.

Special Thanks go out to the volunteers who made our booth at the Georgina Cares event a success. Georgina Cares is a charity that helps kids go to camps that their family might not otherwise be able to afford. Sail Georgina is a great club due to the hard work of the membership. At this year's Fall General Meeting the executive decided to honour some of the members that often get overlooked. These are members that don't win races, don't have a seat on the executive but help to make Sail Georgina the great club it is. I had the honour of presenting these special awards to members for their dedication to the sport of sailing in general and to Sail Georgina, specifically.

For being a great encourager to new sailors, our 2008 Mentor Award goes to Grant Vine.

For extra effort in assisting in all areas of club activities, the Busy Bees award goes to The Newman Family.

For behind the scenes physical labour, our Handyman award goes to Les Simm.

Because he's still sailing after all these years, our Salty Dawg award goes to Harold Skinner and his Bonnie Lass, Betty.

Sailing School

This summer we've been able to share our love of sailing with 29 youth and 8 adults over two weeks. Special thanks to Annette Brama and Leslie Potvin and to all of the club volunteers. Having adult volunteers really adds to the quaility of the program we are able to provide.

"Pirates of the Chili Bean" was a great success! Thanks to all the chefs who brought their finest chilies to share, and for all the tasters who voted for the best chef at Sail Georgina. Thanks to the Newman's for assisting with the setup and tear down, and congratulations to Dianne Leigh and Chris Potvin who won the prizes in a heated battle for supremacy.

Harbour access

As members are readying their boats for launch, I just want to remind everyone that the Jackson's Point Harbour does not officially open until May 17th. From May 1st until the Victoria day weekend (in May), SGA boats may be docked at their allocated slips in the harbour, but the town will provide no staffing, monitoring or security,and boats that are in the harbour at this time are left there entirely at the owner's risk. From the Victoria day weekend (in May) until the Thanksgiving weekend (in October), the harbour will be staffed and operational. The town will be supplying Vice Commodore Neil with both parking permits and gate keys May 1. Slip assignments are posted at http://sailgeorgina.googlepages.com/slipassignments

Sail Georgina's annual general meeting and awards banquet was held Nov 24 at The Lake Simcoe Arms. After a nice dinner and some social time the AGM commenced. The financial statements and budget were presented, Constitutional amendments ratified and the policy documents presented. Elections were held and the SGA officers for 2008 will be: Commodore - Nancy Glover, Vice Commodore - Neil Kinnear, Rear Commodore - Lindsay Hayworth, Treasurer - Karolyn Francis, Secretary - Dianne Leigh. Tim Francis will serve as Past Commodore. Appointed positions, 2 Fleet Captains, Social Officer and Sailing Education Director, will complete the slate of officers for 2008. Tim Francis was thanked for all his hard work as Commodore the past 2 years and a gift was presented. Tim then awarded the Jim Reeves Commodores Plaque for contribution to Rene Aston (2007) and David Robinson (2006). Rene was awarded for her work in developing and running the sailing school and Dave for his role in the development of SGA's club racing program.

Yes, it will be winter too soon. With the season winding down, it's time to haul out the sailing school dinghies. We are scheduling this activity for 1pm on Sunday, September 16th. This is a good way to complete your volunteer work hours for the year, and it's the sort of work that will not take too long if we have enough people to help; please mark your calendar, and come out to help us.

Racing Update

The racing season is in full swing; after a very slow start to the year, the new summer weeknight series was a great success. That series has now completed, and we have just the fall series of club racing left (6 races across 3 Saturdays in September and October). We are also hosting the traditional Georgina Cup (the last race of the LSIS interclub series) on September 22. There will be a series of activities surrounding the Georgina Cup, including a BBQ at the whispering pines. You are encouraged to come out to any of these events; club racing, LSIS racing, or even just the LSIS BBQ. Contact our fleet captain (Jeff Reid) if you have any questions, or would be willing to help with any of these events.

As most of you know, Sandy McKnight (currently our Secretary) is a long time member of the club, and has been actively engaged in the executive for many years. Sadly, the long drive from Oakville (where he lives) to Georgina has finally become too much, and Sandy will be leaving the club after this year. We will be hosting a club BBQ on Sat Sept 15th, at 6 pm (after the two club races scheduled for that day) as a general get together, and a chance to give Sandy the send off he deserves; please come out and join us for this event. Sailing School Update

The Sailing School has completed for the year. We had some excitement at the start of the season getting instructors arranged, but our long time sailing school director (Rene Aston) managed to arrange instructors from OSA, and the season completed mostly as planned, and with some very happy students. After many years and countless hours working on the sailing school, Rene is planning to cruise next summer, and so this season was her last as our sailing school director. The club is indebted to Rene for the work and energy she has contributed over the years; we have grown the sailing school substantially due to her efforts. Thanks Rene!

Racing News

Still a very slow season in club racing; after promising winds were forecast for last Saturday, a calm fell over the racers just after the start line - and unfortunately, both races scheduled for the day had to be abandoned due to lack of wind. In better news, the club is doing really well in the LSIS series, and the next two races for that series are coming up this weekend.

On Friday, June 9th after waiting out thunderstorms, four boats from Sail Georgina set out for Lagoon City Yacht Club (LCYC) for the first two races of the Lake Simcoe Interclub Series (LSIS). Only three made it. Ken Hendry of Blue Sky must have a tale to tell since his boat returned to the harbour with a broken mast!

Saturday's race was the traditional around Thorah Island course. Fears of another bug ridden drifter were soon set aside as the race began with about 8 knots of wind. Jeff Reid, took the 1st place flag in the White Sail Low division. Tim Glover, Carl White and Dave Robinson all competed in the White Sail High Division with Tim taking 1st, Carl 3rd and Dave 5th. Sunday's course was the LCYC triangle. Despite predictions of light winds there was a nice 5 knot breeze blowing. SGA had another very good showing with Jeff Reid again winning his race, Carl White placing 2nd, Tim Glover placing 3rd and Dave Robinson 5th. With 6 flags, SGA is the club to beat! Memorial for John Palmer

John Palmer's funeral is scheduled for 11am Friday June 8th, at St Georges Church (beside Sibbald Park, overlooking the lake).

We are also going to hold an on-water memorial ceremony for him on the afternoon of Sunday June 10th. The plan is to meet at our outer race mark for a "Scotch on ice" in remembrance of John - a small quantity of Scotch will be sprinkled on the waters. The timing will coincide with our returning racers from Lagoon City, but the target is to hold the ceremony at Mark 4, at 3pm, so any boats leaving our harbour should be prepared for a ~2:30 departure to the mark - but the exact time will be determined by the schedule of boats arriving from Lagoon City. Any boats that wanted to come by from other clubs (particularly LSIS racers) would also be welcome.

Racing Clinic

The season is almost upon us, and the first event of the year is our on-water racing clinic. If you have raced before, this is a great chance to clear away some of the cobwebs and brush up your skills.

For those of you who have not raced before, the racing clinic is a fabulous opportunity to learn the basics. The racing clinic is not a competitive event, but is a series of drills to help you understand and improve important aspects like a race start, or efficient mark rounding. If you have been trying to decide whether to race your boat this year, the racing clinic is a good way to get a feel for the environment, and to see if you enjoy it. Come on out and give it a try!

Don't forget that the first race of the year is Victoria Day Monday (May 21st). If you plan to race this season (yes, do!), then please see the sail measurement information, below.

The racing clinic will be held on Saturday, May 19th. It will have a 9am start, and we should be finished about 4 pm. The cost is $25 per boat. It will be a great start for the season, come on out and enjoy the fun.

Attention Racers!

In order to race in Sail Georgina club races and in the Lake Simcoe Inter-club Series, all boats must have a current PHRF Certificate. PHRF stands for Performance Handicap Racing Fleet and is a well established handicapping system that provides a multiplier on the actual time a boat takes to complete a race that allows vastly different boats to compete fairly. A full explanation of the PHRF system is available at the PHRF-Lake Ontario website http://www.phrf-lo.org/

New boats to the club which are planning on racing this season, as well as boats with new sails or equipment must have their sails measured by the club handicapper before they can race. A certificate costs $25, and is included in the seasonal racing fee of $75.

The club measurer will be available to measure sails and discuss your rating on Friday, May 18th from 4pm to 9 pm and again on Saturday, May 19th after the completion of the on-water racing clinic (from approximately 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm)

On-water Racing Clinic - Saturday, May 19th, 2007

This event is designed to give everyone a chance to practice the skills critical to effective racing. Participants will use their own boats and non-owners can sign on as crew, as space permits. The clinician will be aboard the chase boat and will co-ordinate a series of drills designed to practice the basics of starts, mark roundings and basic tactics. The style is to be informal, easy-going and fun.

No experience is necessary - the racing clinic is a great way for experienced skippers to refresh their skills, and for beginners to start to learn the basics. Clinic Leader
Our clinician, Mr. Rob Hupfield, has led our clinics in the past, is a past CYA Sailing instructor, former Director of the Whitby Yacht Club sailing school and a passionate racer. Rob campaigned Reactor, his J-24, out of WYC for three seasons, competing in Ontario and National Championships as well as World Qualifiers and the 2002 J-24 Worlds at Kingston. Previous to that he sailed his Tanzer 22 Cool Fusion to many victories, taking first in his division at the Youngstown Level Regatta in 1999. Rob currently campaigns a Star at Queen City Yacht Club.

Volunteer work hours

We are continuing with the work hours program that we established last year; all members with a Sail Georgina slip are required to contribute at least 8 hours of volunteer work for the club. There are lots of activities that require help; the first few are:

We will be launching the CL16 Sailing School boats on Saturday, May 26
We need a Sail Georgina mailing box to be built in the harbour office
We need a new roof to be built over the green storage bin (the old roof collapsed in the winter)

Slip Fees

Just a reminder to all members with a slip this year; the second (and final) installment of your slip fees are due by May 1st. No boats are allowed to be placed in the harbour unless the slip fees have been paid in full. In support of this, only members who have fully paid their fees are shown on the slip allocation diagram. Town Slips in the Harbour

The Town has 12 seasonal slips in the harbour, that they make available via a lottery. If you're on the wait list for a Sail Georgina slip, applying for the town lottery will not guarantee you a slip, but there are reasonable odds. If you are interested, you need to submit your name, phone number, mailing address and vessel size in writing to the town. Applications must be received by Feb 19th.

2007 Racing Schedule

The Racing Committee have now established the racing schedule for 2007. We will follow the same basic pattern as last year, with an overall club championship of 18 races, broken into 3 series of 6 races each. New this year, we are planning an additional weekday series that will not count as part of the club championship, to be run on 6 consecutive Thursday evenings in the summer. We are also planning the annual Mayor's Cup Race, and the LSIS Georgina Cup race.

We will start the racing season with our well received on-water clinic, on Saturday May 19th.

The first series will consist of 6 races, with two races held each day: Monday May 21, Saturday May 26, and Saturday June 2nd.

The second series will be 6 Saturday races, with two races held each day: June 23, July 7, and July 21. The June 23rd races will be held as part of our day long Summer Sailstice celebration; we also plan a club BBQ, and the annual sailpast on the same day.

The third and final series that's part of the club championship will be 6 Saturday races (two races per day) held in the fall: September 22, September 29, and October 6th.

The new "Midsummer's Night Dream" series will be held on Thursday nights, starting at 6:30pm, on July 19, 26, August 2, 9, 16 & 23. These races will not count towards the club championship, but a separate set of flags will be awarded for them.

Finally, the two annual cup racing events are the Mayor's Cup, to be held June 16th, and the LSIS Georgina Cup, to be held September 15th.

Racing in the club events will cost $75 for the season, and that price includes the (required) PHRF certificate. Alternatively, members can order a PHRF certificate for $25, and then pay $10 for each race they wish to compete in.

We would like to encourage as many people as possible to compete in the club racing this year, come on out and enjoy the fun. All the details of the racing, along with the complete calendar of events, can be found on our web site, at www.sailgeorgina.ca

I've just finished updating the website, as you can see. This new style moves the menu bar up to the top of each page, which should free up more space for the rest of the page. Thank you, volunteers for Sailing School

I'd like to thank all of our members and guests who volunteered time helping
run our sailing school. We had a very successful year with 75 youth
participants and 8 adults. My hope is that the volunteers would be willing
to assist again next year. Frank deserves special mention as he was willing
to train many of the volunteers throughout the summer.
